In general, Hallmark Movies and Mysteries produces some great Christmas movies. They tend to be high-quality, but they also tend to be tear-jerkers. For this reason, I'm wary of the M&M premieres this year. It's 2020, and I do not want a good cry.
With that said, here are my preseason thoughts:
A
*These movies have A potential. Of course, it's possible that Hallmark showcased the only decent 45 seconds of the movie in the preview, so...
Christmas Tree Lane (October 24) - A small town, an evil developer, an architect, and a Christmas Eve concert - Hallmark greatness!
Deliver by Christmas (October 25) - adorable preview and a fun premise. I have high hopes for this one.
The Christmas Ring (November 7) - David Alpay and a quest to find the story behind his grandmother's engagement ring. I like it.
The Christmas Bow (November 8) - the tragedy factor is low, the romance looks sweet, and the female lead (Lucia Micarelli) is a legit violinist. I also love Michael Rady, so I am looking forward to this one.
USS Christmas (November 28) - Hallmark always does a great job with its military movies, and I am sure that this one will not disappoint.
Time For Us to Come Home For Christmas (December 6) - Lacey Chabert and a small, New England Inn. Need I say more?
B/C
*These movies have that distinctly-average feel to them already. I hope I'm wrong, but of course, I won't be mad either way.
Christmas Doctor (November 15) - I like the plot of this one, and the casting seems great. It just might pull on the heartstrings a little too much for 2020, though.
A Godwink Christmas: Second Chance, First Love (November 22) - I have nothing to say about this. It's probably a decent movie (the Godwinks usually are), but they chose a decidedly average clip for the preview.
D/F
*These movies have real dud potential. I'll still watch, though.
**Unless they're too sad. I want only happy things this year.
Cranberry Christmas (October 31) - a Christmas movie about marital problems. I'm just not sure that people need this right now.
Holly and Ivy (November 1) - I'll skip this likely heartwarming tale of a single mom who has Lymphoma and must find a guardian for her children. I mean, really, Hallmark?
Meet Me at Christmas (November 14) - I'm annoyed by the banter already. Not a good sign.
And here's my tally of Hallmark plot elements based on the previews. It is shaping up to be a good Hallmark year!
Weddings/brides - 1
Workaholics - 2
Small towns - 6
Architects - 1
Tragedy/orphans - 7 (too high, IMO)
Cookie baking - 1
Ice skating - 1
Tree lots - 4
Evil developers - 1
Home Renovations (for the HGTV crowd) - 2
Christmas Eve Concerts - 2
* Grading Scale:
A = This is seriously a good movie. It will remain on my DVR for the season.
B = Totally exceeded my expectations. I'm happy to recommend.
C = This is an average Hallmark movie. Good holiday fun.
D = I'm disappointed... but I watched it. Why not?
F = I actually had a hard time getting through this one. And that says a lot.
