So here's the thing: I love Kristin Chenoweth. I love Scott Wolf. I sing, and I love choirs. Therefore, I just knew that I would love this movie... and then I didn't. I'm sad about it too.
In this movie, Kristin Chenoweth is a choir director who has to compose a new song to raise money for her Christmas choir. She lives in a super cute apartment in New York City, and there's no way that she could afford this in real life, given her profession. (Note to self: write a future post on the economics of Hallmark movies. Based on what I am seeing, all Hallmark characters must be independently wealthy, and I'd like to explore this.) Chenoweth, aka Ms. Clark, meets architect Greg. Greg is our first architect of the season, and I admire Hallmark for their restraint. As it turns out, Greg has a son who can sing, so he joins Ms. Clark's choir, and she finds lots of excuses to hang out with father and son. It's all a bit weird, and super unprofessional.
And then the movie takes a turn, which I will not spoil for you. I kind of like the turn. But then again, it makes everything weird. While I like the message of this one, part of me wishes that it had stuck to tree lightings, cookie decorating, and amicable breakups. Furthermore, while I suspect that Hallmark was going for sweet and touching, the love story was kind of uncomfortable.
Hallmark gets an A on: wardrobe; her white winter coat
Hallmark gets a D on: too much tanner; teacher and student texting (it feels weird); the Christmas tree; the winter storm that comes out of nowhere (winter storms don't do this); early kiss; the choir; lack of chemistry
Grade: D
* Note Grading Scale:
A = This is seriously a good movie. It will remain on my DVR for the season.
B = Totally exceeded my expectations. I'm happy to recommend.
C = This is an average Hallmark movie. Good holiday fun.
D = I'm disappointed... but I watched it. Why not?
F = I actually had a hard time getting through this one. And that says a lot.
