I've already commented on Hallmark's unfortunate decision to begin their Christmas movies in October, so I'll move on. I did, however, appreciate this line: "I bet you're one of those people that starts playing music before Halloween." I see what you did there, Hallmark, but I'm still kind of mad.
Given that it is not yet November, I just wasn't ready for the Hallmark staples, and this movie had about 90% of them: a character named Nick, lots of Christmas music, gingerbread, carolers, homemade ornaments, cookie decorating, lots of snow, and a tree lighting ceremony. Perhaps I would have liked this movie better in December.
Mostly, the plot was slow, and I was bored. There were a few bright spots, and it was fun to see Warner from Legally Blonde again, but this one needed a little more bend and a lot more snap.
Hallmark gets an A on: Jill Wagner - she's great; Dr. Mike - this may be the first time that I liked the guy who doesn't get the girl; great meet-cute; nice father daughter relationship with lots of wisdom shared; funny band audition scene; super cute kid actor
Hallmark gets a D on: October premieres; awkward date scene; plot that never really went anywhere; contrived drama; way too amicable breakup, even for Hallmark
Grade: D+
* Note Grading Scale:
A = This is seriously a good movie. It will remain on my DVR for the season.
B = Totally exceeded my expectations. I'm happy to recommend.
C = This is an average Hallmark movie. Good holiday fun.
D = I'm disappointed... but I watched it. Why not?
F = I actually had a hard time getting through this one. And that says a lot.
