Christmas in Evergreen: Tidings of too much Joy | C

Hallmark Channel Premiere | November 29, 2019

The people in this town haven't figured out that I am Santa yet. My name is Nick. I say oddly wise and prescient things. What more can I do?

This is Hallmark's third Christmas in Evergreen movie. As a general rule, a sequel is a gamble, and a threequel is a mistake. I would say that rule holds true here.

In this movie, Katie takes a trip to Evergreen to see if everything that she has heard about the famous Christmas town is true. Within thirty seconds, she is best friends with everyone in town. She bakes cookies, goes caroling, wishes on the snow globe, and spends a lot of time with love interest Ben. If you feel like you've seen this before, you have.

Having liked the first two Evergreen movies, I did enjoy seeing the three leading ladies together for a brief moment at the beginning of this one. Furthermore, the cast of recurring characters is cute and enjoyable. However, similar to most movie franchises, Evergreen went one installment too far. While the over-the-top Christmas spirit and friendliness was cute in the first movie and only slightly off-putting in the second, it seems way overdone by movie

#3. In fact, it all has a distinctly Stepford feel. By the time the town finds the 50-year old time capsule that magically appears behind some mechanized wooden planks at the turn of a key, the Evergreen series has jumped the shark.

Hallmark gets an A on: train travel; cast of characters; bringing our three Evergreen leading ladies together for a quick scene; Ninja toaster oven product placement (not subtle, but this is a new product, so it got my attention)

Hallmark gets a D on: sepia tone flashbacks; Toonces the driving cat scenes; CGI snowmen; Wooden Fishes (the name of Katie's first novel)

Grade: C

* Note Grading Scale:

A = This is seriously a good movie. It will remain on my DVR for the season.

B = Totally exceeded my expectations. I'm happy to recommend.

C = This is an average Hallmark movie. Good holiday fun.

D = I'm disappointed... but I watched it. Why not?

F = I actually had a hard time getting through this one. And that says a lot.
