“The hills are alive with the sound of chestnuts roasting on an open fire”

According to Hallmark, it snows a lot in Memphis. According to Google, Memphis receives an average of 3 inches of snow per year. Therefore, either Hallmark is lying to us, or this movie takes place during some freak Snowpocalypse event.

Harper is a museum curator who has worked all over the world and returns home to Memphis for the holidays. She gives such a wonderful tour of Graceland to three kids that single dad Owen hires her as their nanny. (It’s like the snow thing- just go with it). Owen is Captain von Trapp without the whistle, and Harper is Maria without the yodeling. And in true “Edelweiss” fashion, she teaches Owen to let go of his rigid schedule and just enjoy his kids.

“Doe, a deer, a female deer...”

I enjoyed the last hour of this movie much more than the first. The story was pretty average, but the romance was kind of sweet. The characters were likeable, and I didn’t get bored. Also, the Elvis music bumped it up a letter grade.

Hallmark gets an A on: cameo by Priscilla Presley; baking scene(s); Elvis music; Kaitlin Doubleday; wardrobe; cute romance; musical decorating montage; not forcing southern accents on everyone

Hallmark gets a D on: the snow, no Elvis impersonators (a missed opportunity); no ducks at The Peabody (another missed opportunity); slow start

Ladies and gentlemen, the von Trapp family singers

Grade: B-

* Note Grading Scale:

A = This is seriously a good movie. It will remain on my DVR for the season.

B = Totally exceeded my expectations. I'm happy to recommend.

C = This is an average Hallmark movie. Good holiday fun.

D = I'm disappointed... but I watched it. Why not?

F = I actually had a hard time getting through this one. And that says a lot.
