First of all, Hallmark gets an A on the title of this movie. I have spent a good part of the day saying, "It's Christmas comma Eve," and I find it delightful. Any time we can draw attention to the importance of punctuation, I'm in favor.
Second, this was solid Hallmark fare. It had all of the elements: tree shopping, tree decorating, music, carol singing, and the incredibly enjoyable musical montage as the characters are getting ready for a huge Christmas concert in... gulp... just 9 days!
It's a plot we have seen before, but it had some new, relevant innovations such as the Christmas wish list to raise money for school arts programs (a great idea, really) and the web-based benefit concert. While the details were a bit far-fetched, I liked the spirit of it.
On a side note, I love these huge, romantic gestures such as learning to play the guitar for an anniversary and writing a song for someone you are not even yet dating. However, I do wonder if we are setting ourselves up for disappointment with our affinity for these movies. In our real, non-Hallmark lives, it's important to remember that simply unloading the dishwasher is a sign of true love. But I digress.
Hallmark gets an A on: The movie's title; Hair; Christmas decor; The discussion of the "meet cute" (it's like they are trying to bring us into their world... not so much breaking the fourth wall, but close); Banter, Chemistry between the two leads; Wardrobe; Music; Final scene
Hallmark gets a D on: His sweaters - I thought we were finished when we got through the gray one, but then a brown one appeared, and it was the exact. same. awful. sweater.
Grade: B
* Note Grading Scale:
A = This is seriously a good movie. It will remain on my DVR for the season.
B = Totally exceeded my expectations. I'm happy to recommend.
C = This is an average Hallmark movie. Good holiday fun.
D = I'm disappointed... but I watched it. Why not?
F = I actually had a hard time getting through this one. And that says a lot.
